Totten Book Signing at Library Saturday, January 20th from 10am to 3pm.
Local author Gary Totten will be at the Flora Public Library Saturday, January 20th from 10am to 3pm to sign his book, The Life of a Dog and Other Tales: Stories from the Rural Heartland. Paperback copies will be available for $16.00 .
Mr. Totten hails from Olney, IL and was a 1965 graduate from East Richland High School. He also attended Olney Central College before earning a business degree at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. After working many years as a labor relations manager, Gary decided to retire and move back to the small town life he remembered from his youth.
While attending East Richland High School, Mr. Totten discovered he had a passion for writing. He was inspired by his former English teacher, Arlene Flick. After moving back, Gary decided to realize a long held dream to write a book of short stories. Gary’s book, The Life of a Dog and other Tales, contains 11 stories that are based on real life experiences. His stories are inspired by the hardworking people of southern Illinois. The author’s intentions in writing these stories were to incorporate his life philosophies, like gratitude for the everyday and appreciation for the little things in life.
Gary and his wife and their two dogs reside near Noble, IL.
The Flora Public Library is very excited to have Gary and his wife come for a book signing Saturday, January 20th from 10am to 3pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, please check the library’s Facebook page or call the library at 662‑6553.

Digital copies of HARSTAN yearbooks from Flora High School, for years 1920-1977 will be made available for sale to the public. Years 1978-2001 may be released at a later date. Editions from the last 15 years, will not be made available for sale to the public. Each copy of the HARSTAN requested for purchase will be saved onto an individual flash drive provided by the library. Multiple copies of the same year will be saved on individual flash drives as well. One copy, regardless of date, equals one flash drive. Digital editions from 1920-1977 will be available for purchase for $25.00 per copy, both for same year and different years. Any defective flash drive will be replaced upon return of the original to the library within 30 days of purchase. For computer security reasons, copies will not be saved to personal devices.
HARSTANS will be ordered by filling out an order form and returning it to the library. Order forms must accompany all orders. Order forms may be obtained in person at the library, downloaded from the library website at www.florapubliclibrary.org or requested by email at email@example.com. Anyone paying with PayPal will use the PayPal form on the library website. A postage fee of $4.00 will be charged per flash drive if an order is mailed.
Patrons needing HARSTANS for years 1978-current, may use the print editions that are part of the library’s Local History Collection. Patrons may contact Lisa Hemrich, Yearbook Coordinator at Flora High School, 618-662-8316, about purchasing print copies of the HARSTAN that are still available for the last fifteen years.

Flora Public Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. The new service includes free tests specifically based on the state’s DMV materials. It is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that let users hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask portions of the screen for greater visibility on the practice tests.
This partnership allows the Flora Public Library to harness the power of Driving-Tests.org’s specialized practice exams to turn new drivers into safer drivers. The new program will work as an outreach to several valued groups of patrons, including teens, those with disabilities, and seniors who need to take a renewal exam, as well as patrons at every other stage of life.
Driving-Tests.org is a part of Elegant E-Learning, Inc., an eight-year-old company with a proven track record of revolutionizing online resources for learner drivers. Driving-Tests.org is part of a plan to improve global driver safety by providing free practice tests written by experts to anyone who wants to study, along with online copies of official study guides. To help achieve this goal, the company has also created driving practice sites for the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and India.
